Specialty Project
Hickory Greens Pickleball
Context
Located in suburban Cleveland, Ohio, the Hickory Greens Pickleball Amenity Center serves as the social and recreational heart of a 200-plus-home Del Webb community.
Commissioned by Pulte Group, the 10,000-square-foot facility reinterprets the pole barn that once occupied the site, transforming its simple, utilitarian form into a contemporary space that celebrates light, craft, and community.
Design
The building organizes three regulation indoor pickleball courts within a bright, expansive volume defined by clerestory glazing and exposed structural framing. Circulation and support areas wrap around the courts, maintaining clear visual connections between spaces.
At the center, a Great Hall serves as a flexible gathering space for community events and casual interaction. Large doors open onto outdoor patios that extend activity into the landscape and link to walking trails throughout the neighborhood. A golf simulator and fitness center complement the program, offering year-round recreation and wellness.
Key Features
Material choices recall the region’s agrarian past while introducing a modern character. Natural wood, corrugated metal, and simple gabled roof forms reference the site’s history and create a warm, familiar identity.
The structural rhythm, expressed inside and out, organizes the architecture and reinforces its honest and functional character. Daylight, durability, and acoustics were carefully balanced to create a comfortable and inviting environment for all users.
Impact
Designed to foster connection and active living, the Amenity Center has become a vibrant hub for the Hickory Greens community. It embodies Studio Carney Architecture’s commitment to creating architecture that bridges past and present while enhancing everyday life.
Rooted in local heritage and crafted for modern use, the building celebrates community, wellness, and a sense of belonging.
