Cedar Lake Home

Context

Parker Residence sits along the southern shore of Cedar Lake in Lake Villa, Illinois, on a property that has been in the homeowner’s family since 1923. What once served as a simple summer cottage has been thoughtfully transformed into a full-time lakeside retreat. The homeowners wanted a place to age comfortably, stay connected to nature, and welcome their children and grandchildren.

Building close to the water brought challenges, as the soft lakebed soils required a deep foundation system. To secure the structure, Studio Carney Architecture designed the home on 53 helical piles anchored deep below the surface, ensuring stability for generations to come.

Design

The design reimagines the spirit of a classic lakeside cabin through a clean, contemporary lens. From the street, the home feels warm and inviting, while the rear elevation opens fully to the lake with expansive glass and generous outdoor spaces. A screened porch creates a comfortable setting for gatherings on warm evenings, and guest rooms above extend onto a large rooftop deck with panoramic water views. Inside, a central axis from the front door to a tall window perfectly frames the lake beyond, drawing light and sightlines through the heart of the home.

Key Features

Parker Residence was designed for comfort, practicality, and family living. A built-in dog wash off the side entry keeps the home functional after lakeside adventures. The primary suite faces the water and opens directly onto the screened porch for quiet mornings outdoors. A freestanding soaking tub sits in perfect alignment with the lake, connecting the calm of the interior with the water beyond. Durable, low-maintenance materials ensure lasting beauty and ease of care.
